Default Really loud knock after removal of covers.

Need some advice.

I had some powder coating done on the side covers. Of course when they were removed I lost some oil. I replaced the covers, new gaskets and replacing the oil that was lost with new. After everything was back together I took it down the road for a test run and about a mile out, a very loud knock started. Not a tapping a real loud knock. I limped it home and when I was back in the garage it seemed to quiet down but I can still hear a knock. It seems to be coming from the front cylinder area. When the noise was happening I had 37 PSI of oil pressure and the oil level is good.

Before the above work was done I also installed ROCKOUTS to the bike. <--After this I went on a 50 mile ride and all was well with no knocking noise. Just to make sure we opened up the rocker covers again to check the rocker arms and found nothing that seemed wrong.

Anyone experience the same thing with some insight?

This is a 2014 Ultra limited.

Just a guess, but did you pull the exhaust and just put it back on? If so, look around for anything touching or what have you.

Fingers crossed for an easy fix.

What side covers are you referring too?

I was going to ask about exhaust too. When I did my cams, I had a malformed gasket that I didn't notice and when I started the bike up, it made a terrible knocking sound from the front cylinder. Finally, took the exhaust off, put in new OEM gaskets and voila, no more knocking.

I hope it is a gasket as described. Noise from the engine area is always hard to pin down.

Yea, I did have the exhaust off. That is a good idea to check out a possible misalignment or possibly a gasket.

THe covers I had off were all three. Primary, transmission and cam covers.
along with the exhaust to drill out the catalytic converter.

Any chance there's something flopping around in the exhaust from drilling out the converter?

Thanks for buying my Rockouts BTW

Did you use a new gasket when you replaced the exhaust pipe?

Another good idea to check. The converter was cleaned out well, but worth a look.

And thanks for figuring out the rocker noise and creating an affordable fix. I am telling everyone I come across with a Harley about them!

As a followup, Turns out it was an exhaust leak at the flange. I am surprised how ominous it sounds but sure am glad that it was a simple fix.

Thanks to all that helped!
