Default 2016 ROad Glide ignition removal

I just ordered a set of chizeled lo bars and will be installing myself when they get here. I've watched the YouTube videos and read on here how to properly remove the ignition. However, the fork stays locked once the ignition is removed. I also read that there is an alignment tool to unlock the forks. Well I tried to remove the ignition from the off position and it worked fine. Plus the forks didn't lock. Will doing it from the off position hurt anything? Is it supposed to do this?

You don't need to remove the ignition. Just pop off the plastic chrome cover underneath the switch. Then you've got enough room to remove the housing for the accessory switches.
