Default Another cam question (I'm sorry!)

Hello everyone,

I'm going to open by apologizing for yet another cam thread. I did a lot of reading on here and other forums but I can't seem to find an exact answer to my question so I'm asking it now.

Here's the basics:

2013 FLHTK w\ 103
Rinehart 2-1
Big Sucker
Woods TW-555
Tuned with SESPT on dyno

Bought the bike used with these parts, saw the dyno sheet, it was tuned with different air cleaner and exhaust, so it may explain the total **** gas mileage I'm getting (avg 28 MPG hwy solo at 70 MPH). I checked all the other MPG killers and have ensured that they're not an issue, it must be the tune at this point. I'm already going to lay out the money to get it re-tuned, so here's my chance to change things if I need.

I'm considering changing the cam. I'm not a hot rodder, I'm a relaxed touring guy, but like the extra umph and low down torque a cam can give me. I rarely rev the engine above 3.5K RPM. My TW-555 don't seem to really kick in til then. I'm considering a set of SE-255 or TW-222 cams. I figure I can get the SE-255 for cheap or the TW-222 maybe if someone wants to trade for my TW-555. I'm trying not to spend a ton of money on this. I already have adjustable push rods and new bearings and the lifters only have 5K miles on them, so that's a savings. Also worth noting, I don't blan on doing head work or bumping up compression anytime soon.

So my question is, I want maximum torque from idle to like 3Kish RPM. TW-222 or SE-255? Or do neither of those cams really move to the torque curve down and I'm wasting my time?

Thanks in advance.

Oh and PS, I'm aware there are other cams, and everyone love their cam, it's the best cam everrrrrrr!!!!! Awesome. Not really interested in it unless it specifically gives me torque from idle to 3Kish RPM. Thanks!

Andrews 26 and 48 - among others, TW 555 and 222 - among others, S&S 551and then we can start on the smaller companies.

A duration of 220 - 230ish is good for low end torque. You already have a nice cam. My guess is you have a bad tune.

My suggestion is to talk to the guy that is going to tune your bike. He needs to know what your looking for and he can recommend the cam and tune that cam to your riding style and wants. Are you looking for torque? Are you looking for horsepower? Are you looking for better mileage? D you ride two up? Tour? Bar hopper? Discuss all these things with the guy that will have your bike on the dyno and he can help you choose the right cam and set your bike up so that it's just like you want it.

I believe the guy operating the dyno is the most important selection you can make. He can take the perfect combination of components and, depending on his skills, will have it running fantastic or give you the worst bike you have ever been on. Find a good guy to tune your bike.

I've never had Woods cams but I have had the SE255, S&S510, and SE204. I ride similar to you and like the SE204's best.

Good luck in your decision.

Hmmmm......I checked fuel mileage on my bike yesterday. 39.37mpg. basically same cam. B4 I swapped cams I'd solve the mpg issue you currently have.

I would recommend basic headwork with compression bump (mill). The added compression will bring the cam alive and move your torque lower. Better than switching to school bus cam...

The cam you have is fine. Oldhippie is right. Take .010-.020 off the heads and run a .030 head gasket to get the CR up to 10:1-10.25:1 and retune. I have an all bore 107, 10.5:1, and a 600 cam and get 39.9 on an 25 mile round trip to work everyday

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Again, I do not want to do head work or bump up compression, but I appreciate the suggestions.

Sounds like an Andrews 48 or S&S 551 will be a great fit for your current setup. My tuner recommended the 551 for the way I like to ride.

TTS-100 will be awesome if you decide to swap cams. However you need to find a better tuner before you do anything. Even 555's in a stock engine shouldn't get that bad of mpg. Heck I get 35-40.

There are so many ways to go here. You'll need to find someone who knows how to tune using your current tuner or change to something better. If it were my bike, id go with a new tuner/ tune,Andrews48 and a Baker 31 tooth pulley.
