book value less on police special
I have a late model shovel FLT and looking at upgrading to a late model EVO Road king. I am looking at a 1997 that just happens to be a FLHP (police special) instead of a FLHR. I've read many posts about the differences between the standard model and the police special but my question is why is the book value $1000 less for the police model?

I doubt "the book" is very accurate on a soon to be 20 year old Touring Model. If in good condition, just about any RK, EG, or Ultra will probably be worth around $4k on the wholesale market & sell retail for around $5k. Might retail for more because its hard to find a Harley under $7k. Add-ons, paint schemes, and Carb or FI on a bike that age won't matter a whole lot in the real world. Imo, its more of a miles and condition thing.

I agree, but for the most part, police bikes are cheaper. I just bought a 14 FLHP. Has more, not less, than a FLHR. Especially pre-Rushmore. 09-13 gets you a tach, oil cooler, ABS, and 103 HO engine. So, some is now standard with the Rushmore, but I wanted a cop seat anyway. The price I paid was way less than a 14 non-police Road King.
