Heated Grips - Troubleshooting
Hi all.
I have a 2008 Ultra which has HD heated grips installed.
I don't use them very often but a few weeks ago I did and after a while they failed. This is the second time I've had a set fail and last time the dealer told me it was a common problem with the left hand grip.
I tested that I was getting 12V to the grips and that I had continuity across the bars to the RH grip and based on that, I determined it must be the LH grip which had failed again, so I ordered a new on.
I've fitted it but cannot get them to work.
I have tested as much as I can think of. I am getting 12V from the battery to the grips. When the engine is running and the LH grip is switched on, there is 12V across the 2 terminal pins. When I turn the grip to standby, this drops to 0V. I have removed the RH grip and confirmed I can get continuity across the 2 pins on that......but I cannot get continuity from across the handlebars with the RH grip connected. So...I am now assuming its a wiring problem across the bars.
I've removed the fairing and identified the cable that plugs into the LH grip and which I assume then goes across to the RH grip, I've also identified the 6 wire throttle sensor cable. If I ease the throttle twist grip out a little and tug on either of those cables, the throttle twist is pulled back into the bars, so I assume they are connected.
There are now two things I would like to do.
1 - remove the throttle twist altogether and identify exactly what is connected to it. I'm a bit worried about just pulling this so wondered is there is a particular way to get it out
2 - understand how the wiring for the grips works - are the bars pre-wired to the RH grip (in which case there must be a connector somewhere that I need to find)?
Can anyone offer and suggestions?
Thanks

I checked the 2008 Touring Electrical Diagnostic Manual for heated grips but I did not find anything. I'm guessing that may be because heated grips were not standard on any model that year.
What I do have is from the 2011 Touring Elec Diag Manual .... I'm pretty sure that the 2011 Limited came with heated grips that year.
Again this is for a 2011 model year so there are going to be some differences when compared to your bike.
You might want to see if you can find the installation instructions so you'll know how the grips where supposed to be wired.
