103 Breather

103 Breather
I put the outer Breather cover from a 103, over top of my high flow filter on my 03 RKC. There is no backing plate. One reason was for looks, as I like the look of a scoop but also to keep water out of the filter if hit by rain and or just washing. it also quiets the intake pulse down as well. Will it allow sufficient air flow? The High flow breather with KN filter fits nicely inside and the outer can is held on snuggly with the center bolt. I have no complaints about how it looks but was wondering if it hinders airflow in my 88. I have PC5 and kerker cans as well.

I hear good things about the newer air intake. Have had two dealers tell me with pipes and tuner Tom leave the stock intake that it does a great job. My brother was told the same and did tuner with D&D 2 into 1 with good luck.
If you were building big HP it would probably be a problem but I think you are good.

well there is some kind of backing plate...right?
the keys to a hi flow intake are
lack of restriction ( such as the plastic backing plate sealed to a cover)
filtration- some filters are restrictive or get clogged by dirt
ordering the air into the intake- a hi flow intake will have an air horn as part of a backing plate to order air into the intake, it helps the air to make the turn into the intake and by ordering it more air can move faster into the intake.
the 2014 complete intake (which fits 08 up) flows about 185 CFM, compare to about 160 CFM for the earlier design. the 185 is pretty good for a stock motor.
cajun's use of a cover will have negligible effect on his intake- the backing plate and filtration stay the same...

The set up I have is a high flow round breather approximately 5 inches in diameter with a round K&N fliter. There is no backing plate as the whole breather assembly bolts to the intake manifold. The outer cover to this set up is held on by an allen bolt to the center of the unit. The outer 103 cover on a stock setup also is held on by an allen bolt in the center then covered by a small adheasive insignia 103 or Screamin Eagle plate. This is what I have done. the outer cover is there but the inner backing plate is not and is open.

I put on the SE stage 1 intake which does remove the backing plate/air box. I kept the stock 103 cover and used it on top of the new intake. Extra air is available because of the absence of the air box but the intake noise is very noticeable. I ended up putting the stock intake back on when I added and external breather but I switched the air filter element to a K&N. With headers, tuner, and mufflers, I didn't notice a loss in performance at all. The stock intake breathes more CFM than the motor can ever use and it's much quieter too.
