Default Starting Issue - ring gear or starter

Beginning to have a starting issue on my 2009 Ultra. Bike has 75k miles.

When i push (and hold) the starter button, it starts to turn over normally, but after a second, it stops turning and nothing happens. I have to release the button and re-press to get the bike started. So far it's always started on the second try. This happens when the bike is hot or cold.

I'm wondering if the starter is starting to go bad, last year i had to have part of the tranny rebuilt, and was told at that time that the ring gear was showing signs of wear...

Thanks for any clues on pointing me in the right direction.

edit to add - battery is new

Could be something electrical like switch or starter selnold on starter. I know the battery is new would check the battery connections make sure they are tight.

Could be the starter or solenoid.

Do you hear any noise when you're pushing the starter button when the bike doesn't start?

A worn ring gear wouldn't cause that. It could be increased compression caused by fuel in the cylinder. A hot (worn out) starter motor. Heavy buildup of carbon in the engine. Or a combination of the above.

Back in the days of the Old West, starter started acting like that, I'd take it apart and clean the commutator and change the brushes. If the commutator was real bad, there were shops that would lathe turn it. Dunno if anyone does that kind of thing these days.

Sounds like either a starter or a starter clutch.

U need to have a tech check it out.

The starter solenoid is getting hot/weak and not holding the drive engaged. Before changing it, verify your electrical connections are clean and tight. Especially the grounds. It may be as simple as a loose or dirty connection causing a voltage drop to the solenoid. Verify your battery as well. Just because it's new, doesn't mean its got or getting a full charge.

I doubt it's the ring gear. It's got 75,000 miles on it, it's going to show some wear. You'd hear grinding noise if it was mating well with the starter.

Sounds like to me you have a power supply problem to the starter. You will need a volt meter and a helper. Check standing voltage at battery should be close to 13 v. Get the volt meter on the positive side of the starter and to ground. Hit the starter button see ghat you have. You say after a second nothing so you are looking for power. If you still have volts than its a starter issue if no volts than its a supply issue. Supply issue you are looking at grounds, solenoid, battery, 99.9 % of the time it is that simple.
