Well I can tell you that of course, mine makes the noise in fifth. It does'nt bother me and it's kinda like a gear indicator. And if I'm riding over 60 MPH in fifth, I barley here it at all. One should not even be in fifth under 55 MPH IMHO. Evidently, due to the range of manufacturing tolerances, some are worse than others.
I think what gets people's a$$ out a mile, is that it didn't have to be made like this. Is it a cost saving thing? Is it really because HD was worried about the side loading on the bearing plate or some BS. Now Baker has a kit they'll sell you that comes with a helical cut fifth gear, and a beefier plate.
The other thing I have not seen, but has been a problem, is the vibrating clutch lever when the tranny is under acceleration load. It's due to the cheesy bearing plate from what I've read. Has anybody had that problem?
I talked to the rep at Baker during Bike Week he said that Harley was there and purchased the fix for 5th gear. I guess they will go back now and figure out how it's done. As for me I just turn the radio up.
if you dont have them yet you probably wont. milwaukee dont have them but some of the southern countys do. kenosha and racine have them pretty bad. and yes every 17 years.

oh man oh man oh man. this just has the ring of bs to it (at least to me) with all the engineers at hd, they have to go outside their company and figure out a fix? especially when a large component of that fix is a different cut gear? i dunno about this one.
When HD's only had 5 speeds, people would sometimes complain about 4th gear whine, (like me). On the advice of a the dealer who sold me the whiny bike, I changed the transmission fluid to a full synthetic 75-140, Golden Spectro was the brand. It was tough to find then in this area, but did quiet the gears down by about 2/3rds of the original volume.
My 07 Ultra with 9K is as smooth as silk. No noises that don't belong there, just the radio and my Bassinis both singing away. If you're not happy with your Harley get yourself a nice rice burner. A 750 Itchiepussi would be ideal. They look great for a year and a half and they sound likesewing machines. You should get four of them for your Ultra on trade.
