Default 1997 Roadking Issue

32k Miles on my Flhri. Bike runs great until 2/3 miles and it heats up. Missing and spitting through the throttle body lots of backfiring. Will not do this at idle when hot. Only under load. Revs clean at idle. Replaced injectors,fuel lines, fuel pump, lines and filter. Replaced fuel pressure regulator, cylinder head temp sensor, plugs. It has an older Vance and Hines fueler on it but I wired around it to remove it from the scenario. Same result.Did the test on ignition pickup cooling it down and heating it up with no symptoms. CPS, TPS, ATS? Only code it held was front/Rear injectors. What day the experts ?

Have you ever considered converting it to a carb? Not cheap but bet it would eliminate your performance issues.

No other engine work done? No cam swop (timing off), the ignition timing is OK?

timing is on. definitely heat related. Starts runs idles and rides perfectly for 2/3 miles. When it’s hot and under load it craps the bed.

intake manifold seals/gaskets? Plug wires? I'd lean towards the thing running lean from the symptoms, check the wires running to teh injectors real carefuly, those have been a problem for some guys. That code for injectors makes those REAL suspicious.

I'd change the plug wires, too, its an easy fix and MIGHT be a problem. Modern plug wires aren't really wire, they're a conductive fabric, and deteriorate with time.

Old school wisdom would point to the coil. They act different warm vs cold.

When it starts spitting and backfiring, loosen the gas cap and see if anything changes. Might be a partially plugged tank vent.,,,

I'm not clear if you still have the injector codes. If you have that's where you need to be looking.

If not it could well be as simple as coils or HT wires. Engines will spark well enough to idle but the spark falls apart when under load.


I'd stick some new HT leads on as a matter of course and see if you can get your hands on some coils to substitute.


Good luck. It will be obvious once you find the answer. It always is.!
