Appreciate the replies. Thanks. Looked up the compensator problem. Too bad MoCo didn't stay with ones like used on my 65 and 84. Damn things are bulletproof.
So...if it needs replacing I see that J& P sells the parts.

???? Under Fitment Note: Installation requires the purchase of HD OEM's 12200065, 62700064 and 10300021 from your local HD dealer, sold separately.
Saw this on the flea
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Heavy-Duty-...arley-Davidson
Then therz the SE one from HD (still available?)
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...UXIPNhN7zd5y5r
So does Baker but at a much greater cost as well (looks like $750?)
Recommendations? Other suppliers?
Also, what about the Hayden primary chain adjuster if I do not use Baker? Yes? No?

The Y pipes usually cracked due to bad front motor mounts. If the pipe is cracked, I would toss it and replace the exhaust with a far better aftermarket duals or 2 into 1 and eliminate the hassle and replace the front mount too.
The compensator is a must do, if it hasn't been replaced. I also put the IDS rear sprocket on mine and it was a world of difference with quieter transmission and less vibration.
If you are getting noise in the transmission area, but stops when pulling in the clutch then the inner primary bearing needs replaced, a somewhat common problem. Its in the primary where the trans shaft enters. Also some of these transmissions would have the large main bearing go bad and start making noise, usually a clicking noise when pushing the bike backwards. A full tool set for overhaul is about $900, plus parts, and usually dealers charge about $1200-1500 to do a rebuild if bearings let go, so about the same price either way. Not real common but did occur back then. keeping the trans oil changed at same time engine oil is changed (and using synthetic too) really helps on preventing problems, in my experience.
