Thanks guys, will give the leverage method a try tomorrow and was wondering what "the tool" for this would be, maybe a trip to sears is in the books tomorrow too.

i got the old one out. Some wood screws was the trick. Put the new seal in but think I went too far. Was trying to get it in a last little bit and must’ve had an adrenaline kick or something ....so, to the recommendation of getting two the first time, is this too far in or does it make a difference? Since I know how to pull them out now do you recommend I redo?

thanks,
Steve

Trying to remember what's behind there I believe the main shaft roller bearings but I think you're ok

There is about .35" from the nose of the main shaft to the snap ring holding the needle bearing in place (see picture) That seal is not that thick. The seal driver I use to install that seal sets the seal about .035 below the nose of the main shaft. (see pic). You should be fine unless your really drove that seal home and deformed it against that snap ring
.

So how did it go? Did you get it all back together?

No, didn't get back around to it after I had a couple "you should be ok's". Hope to get back to it this weekend (too many track meets and practices before then...).

Need to make sure I've got the right sized gauge to make sure i get the race installed to the instructions.

Would you recommend using red Loctite as mentioned by some for the race?

Thanks,
Steve

red locktite didnt stop it from happening again 15-20k miles later and made installing the race a little nerve racking. imo

Those that use Loctite on the race use green, not red. I don’t install them with Loctite, but some do.
