Default Gas smell is becoming overwhelming

2011 DYNA FXDC. Even with a almost empty tank the gas smell is becoming overwhelming when I park the bike. No gas leak , no spills, cap is tight. Just can not figure out where the smell is coming from. HD dealer has no answer and dismisses the issue as heat from the engine. It has become much worse than last year. Anyone have a solution.

Pop the dash off- see if the vent line that hooks to the vapor valve (a one way check valve & hose to vent tank pressure away from the rider) has come loose, is installed backwards, or is plugged. You should be able to blow air through that, but not draw air (vacuum).

Just reading the title, I didn't know if you were referring to yourself or your bike.

The tank cap is one way in. Of course if it was leaking, you would see fuel at tank top. However, have seen someone put a non vent cap and remove the verticle pressure check valve in the vent line that comes off the tank in the front, goes under the tank in a channel and then vertical to the ground in front of rear tire. That way it vents and breathes from that hose. Problem is with out that pressure relief spring, any braking sends surges of raw fuel from tank down hose. It is possible on older bikes that hose has heat cooked and cracked under the tank in that channel.
You are going to get a whiff of fuel from a hot bike in a garage unless it is a CA bike with a canaster. But not what you described. You have a leak if it gets worst after 15 minutes setting.

Definitely check the vent hoses they deteriorate. Go to the auto parts and get some decent hose and replace them.

I solved the smell problem. I recharged my K&N air filter and while it was drying I cleaned the throttle butterfly. I ton of gunk came off. I was rea
lly surprised considering I only use Sunoco and Shell 93. Since the cleaning the gas problem vanished. Thanks for offering the solution. I printed it for future reference.

On a FI bike, when you cut it off, that last spray of fuel drops in throttle body and manifold.
Does that. Tin men love it since they blame it on the vent system. Sell the BS vents to the opening that we had pre 1960s.
All this and all it needed was it's *** wiped.
