Default How far to ride on tire plug? & Stop & Go Pocket Tire Plugger

Caught a nail in my rear tread a week back. Put in a mushroom plug (kit info below), and its holding air. Have done a few 100+ miles rides since plugging.
Tire has about 8k on it, still a relatively healthy tread left (rear tire, Metz 888 if it matters)

Wondering how long or far folks ride on a tire plug. Nail was just off center of the tread (not in sidewall)

I did order a new tire (I pull rims myself etc) but as the plug is holding am wondering if I should ride this out a bit longer as it is holding air & seems to ride normally.

Have read dozens of articles but wondering what the consensus here is.
Thankfully this happened near home so could do the repair in my own garage w/ no tow.

A shout out to the Stop & Go Tire Plugger kit. As I run dynabeads in the tires now I cannot use rope/sticky plugs one uses in car tires as the beads will stick to it (have used those w/ great success on car/truck).
Bought this for carry on longer tours. Was able to put in the plug w/out pulling rim from the bike. Wasn't too difficult. Good emergency solution.

On my former bike I was 200 miles from home and picked up a nail 'dead center' up front.
Repaired with the 'mushroom type plug' and fretted the remaining part of the trip.
When I had the tire looked at, at a m/c shop, I had a chance to look inside the tire before they made the repair....(damn, that plug worked as advertised !!! amazing)
After talking with the mechanic, I decided to have them put a heat treated patch over the plug I inserted.
They cut the mushroom plug almost flush with the interior side of the tire, then put the heat patch directly over the plug.
I highly recommend this kit !!!

Nice to hear they work so well. I've got the same kit with the air compressor that plugs into the bike as well.
Thankfully I haven't needed to use it yet.

Caught a small nail on the rear tire a couple of years back when my GF and I were riding the four corners. I carry and use Dynaplugs. Works great, and we continued our trip into Yellowstone. I had about 5000 more miles on the tire be before changing out.

Plugs work but Ride On not only balances but can keep you going should you encounter a potential flat.

Just check tire pressures as you normally would (at least once a week, I'd hope) and if it's not leaking, ride it until it's worn out. It's not suddenly going to spit that plug out.

Done correctly a plug is a permanent repair.

As post #1 states - running dynabeads so Ride On isn't possible. Thanks.

I have read that in a few places but its still in the back of your mind when riding (?). Have read if a plug leaks it can lead to 'tread separation' if air starts seeping thru the plug. Also have read that water/moisture can seep up thru the plug and rust the tire belts. Took lots of digging to find that info though.

BUT, things as they are.....I am leaning at riding this tire a bit longer before swapping. If I could get even 10k on it (8k now) that isn't a total loss.

Part of the issue is the cost of these tires we run.....then mount/balance (whether one pays a shop or does oneself) etc. Would be more frustrating if the tire was new.
