Many people modify exhaust and intake without a proper tune because the internet tells them it's ok. I'm guessing the previous owner did just that. I'd bet the bike would cool down and run better with a comprehensive tune. I'm a firm believer that if people are going to buy expensive parts, dont close the wallet when it's time to make it run correctly.
Good luck!
Has it been on the drum? Otherwise it sounds like you're treating symptoms rather than the problem.
Good luck!
I have an 09 Heritage with a 96ci. It's been an oven since day one. I added many modifications that have helped including cams, true duals, a thunder Max tuner, love jugs, ultracool oil cooler and a crotch cooler. It's still not as cool as my 06 88 but it's much better then it was

I have an 09 RK Classic and its hot too. It also shuts down the rear cylinder if I sit in traffic for more than a few minutes. I am running a stock air filter and Rush slip on pipes. I have thought about a tuner but wasn't sure if it would help being that I run the stock air filter. If you go the tuner route post up here and let us know how it works out.

My old 2004 Road King Police model would fry me in stop and go rides in Las Vegas. My current 2013 Road King Police does not have the same problem. Stage one with a D&D Fat Cat no catalytic converter. Dyno'ed with a power commander V5 and made sure it was not set lean. Gas mileage could be better but power is great and heat problem is virtually non-existent.
Water cooled bikes I've owned were worse if the heat coming off the radiator wasn't vented well.

+1....I put XiEDS on my 2007 Street Glide and it cooled the engine considerably. Better throttle response and the plugs look great. Less than $100 and well worth it. Takes less than 5 minutes to install them.

Hmm, seems like 2009 was the last year the touring bikes didn't have a cat, so I guess that wouldn't be my issue.
I wasn't really planning on getting an FP3 for this bike since I'm using it more for just regular cruising/trips, but seems I might have to to get this heat down...

you can figure out YOUR cruise RPM, and richen it up in that few hundreds RPM range, and cool it off.
