just seemed it folded on me too easily
That is the beauty of the stand. Once down (properly) with the weight of the bike on it the stand is going nowhere. Take the weight of the bike off it and it stows with little effort.

Other bikes rely on strength of spring and the stand going forward more to keep it down.

The HDI versions of HDs have a sensor on the stand. If it is down and you put the bike in gear the engine stops.

As part of a maintenance regime it is a good idea to take all the parts of the stand off and give the moving parts a coat of anti seize grease. PIA on the Sportster as it uses a one time use clip.

Took me forever to trust my jiffy stand. Watching the bike roll forward that inch or two when it's on a slight downhill grade FREAKED me out.....actually it still does. Trust it though. As long as it's locked (which unfortunately you didn't do.....but as said, you won't do it again!) it's fine.

Took me a while to get used to the movement. I don't even pay attention to it anymore. Push it down and walk away.

I have taken off a few times with it still down though. I really like how it fold up on its own. My sport bike wasn't so nice when I took off with the stand down.

I've learned to trust the jiffy stand more and more, I'm on my 2nd HD and I don't think there is a better kick stand made.

Since when locked it does not fold back on a steep hill. So you are correct.

I do this as well. Just have to make sure the stand stops when I kick it forward.

a solution in search of a problem....

we've all spent money on things for the bike that are not really necessary. as long as it works for you, great.

I think most of us have experienced the lock on the Harley Jiffy stand. I move the bike a lot in the garage while standing on the right side of the bike. Since I cant push the stand forward as I settle the bike back on the stand, I back it up just a bit when the stand touches the ground to make sure it's in the locked position.
