Touring special models question

The gloss black parts on the specials are not black chrome, they are painted. We are talking about air cleaner cover, cow bells/font fork, primary cover etc. TLC is necessary to avoid scratching the paint. Meguiar's Scratch X leaves fine scratches in the paint for example. My cowbells have swirls just from washing. I've used a DA polisher, soft gray Griots 3" polishing pad and Chemical Guys V36 and v38 on these areas successfully, but the bike is turning me into a detailing geek. You get the idea.

My bike has lots of chrome. I polish the chrome twice a year when I wax the painted parts and do a really detailed clean. The rest of the time I just wash it, usually with Meguiar’s wash n wax soap. The biggest thing for me is to dry it after washing to not get water spots. It takes 20 or 30 minutes tops, including removing the bags and windshield, and putting the bike up on my jack to make it easier to get to the wheels and left exhaust. People have commented to me about how hard it must be to polish all that chrome. Maybe I am missing something but to me the chrome is pretty low maintenance.

The mufflers are powder coated. The top of the motor/rocker covers are black chrome. The other parts are painted. I normally just use a household sponge when I'm washing the bike but I think I'll switch to something softer to avoid messing up the paint. I'm used to chrome which is a harder finish and more forgiving

Couldn't agree more. In a whole riding season I probably spend a grand total of four hours cleaning/polishing chrome. And it all still looks like new.
