I purchased a new carbureted 02 RK in Sep of 01. I had a choice between the carb and FI but didn't want that "new fangled" FI. Loved that bike and it opened my eyes to a whole new side of motorcycle - touring,
When the 2009's came out with the new frame, wider rear tire, 17" front tire and other improvements I decided it was time to part ways with the RK and I bought a SG. I enjoyed the fairing and the music but when the 2014 Street Glide Specials came out with the 103HO engine (a different cam from the original 103), the bluetooth capable infotainment system with the USB port, the new saddlebag latches, the wider front fork with 18" tire I knew I needed one and traded the SG. Loved that bike too but the blackened 18's caught my eye.
I have an 18 SGSnow. If I were you, I'd look for at least a Rushmore model (14 on). The 103HO will give you the seat of the pants improvement over your 88 that you are looking for. With both the 09 and 14 Street Glide I usually started looking for gas around the 200 mile mark. With the 18 not as much.
