Riding the "Southern Dozen"
Anyone got some insight on riding the Southern Dozen (S12) routes out of Johnson City, TN?

We're planning a trip to that area in June and I've been creating those routes in GPX format to use. Going over the roads on the maps they look like a lot of larger roads.
Does anyone have first-hand experience on these routes?

I live just outside Johnson City in Bristol. Most of those routes are great. I would advise against the snake. It’s gotten very dangerous and the roads on the Sullivan County side are covered in potholes. Lots of crotch rockets flying around and now any a@@hole with a convertible is on that route. I’ve had many oncoming vehicles come on or even across the line. It’s just more of a headache than an enjoyment.
Another good ride is to go towards Grundy Va to Breaks Interstate Park. It’s a great day ride from JC. Research it and see if it’s up your alley.

Never heard of this, and am heading to Gatlinberg next weekend. Might have to check out the locations, and run one or 2 of the ones that are closer to that side of Johnson city.
We have been on all of the famous roads around the smokies a few times, and would welcome some new experiences.
Thanks for sharing the link.

I have ridden the area. I camped south of town, pretty nice RV place. I don't recall "Southern Dozen" before, must be the most recent marketing ploy like WV is doing (not that the area needs it)....either way, very good roads. I recall Little Switzerland....NC is incredible. Snake is a great ride as is the famous Country Store in Shady Valley. I'd go back...and will someday.
wth- that site links to Mapquest....LOL, seems kinda archaic. or do many use Mapquest? I haven't since.....2005
