Default How many hours for an average joe to swap a cam?

Im beginning to contemplate my cam tensioner replacement. While Im in there (Of course) I think Im going to put in a set of Andrews 21's.

The only complicating issues I see are my exhaust manifold studs are rusted to hell. Assuming, hoping and praying that some ATF and acetone works them loose, everything else should be a textbook swap.

Im familiar with the basic operation of replacing the cams but I know in practice there are always factors that complicate things. (Special tools, hard to reach fasteners and other evil spirits)

How long should it take an average joe like myself to do his first cam swap/tensioner on a 06 EG?

Get some PB Blaster to loosen the nuts....let it soak overnight.

I'm a shade tree kind of guy, have done three cams, and I can do it in an afternoon. But I usually have to do something twice.

I did mine solo... Took a couple 4 hour sessions. I was not rushing it and ran into some issues.

If you have all the tools including repair manual and watch the S&S how to video 5-6 hours should do it.

I cut out stock push push rods and went with adjustables. New lifters, New Inner Bearings, New Cams and Gaskets. Picked it all up in a Fuel Moto 48H Cam Kit.

Also picked up Gary’s bearing tool which made removal and install of inner bearings a breeze.

I’m confident I could do it again under 5 hours.

Took me 7 hrs first time but I'm cheap and went through the top to use the factory pushrods. I was changing the breathers and drilling the oil drain holes anyway. Plus I have easy starts and they are a bitch to get TDC.

Next one took me 4 hrs but they were conventional cams. Go slow and watch the videos and have a FSM handy.

No beers til the job is done. Don't ask
