Stop..that won`t hurt a thing.
This old wives tale lives all over the internet.
The motorcycle or the car battery put out way more amperage than the alternator of a car.
The bike draws the amperage it needs to start, the car doesn`t push amperage into the bikes system.
OP: Until you get a good battery in the bike, don`t put too much thought into any codes thrown, the bike is senile right now....

sorry but I am not testing that theory.

I agree, change the battery first. Reset everything and see what it does.
As for the jumping with a running car, from an electrical engineering stand point, I don't see how having a running car makes any difference. As for amps, you could have a diesel truck battery and the bike will only pull as much as it needs. As for voltage, a bike charging system goes up to 14 volts as well. Granted I have an older bike, I am assuming the new bike regulators still output 13.6-14.4 volts.
SO the only problem I could see is if your car has a problem with its alternator and the voltage is way too high, which should show up as a problem in car anyway.
I have wondered if someone started that story because too many people put the positive to negative and zap the electrics that way.
