Default Clutch adjustment help on a 1994 road king

I just had the primary apart to replace the drive belt and it’s now back together with only 1 issue. I set the adjustment screw per the book at 3/4 turn out with 1/8 play on the cable but neutral is next to impossible to get into unless I shut the bike off. Then it falls right in. I will ad it was cranky with neutral before the tear down. Some people say it’s normal but I find that hard to believe. Should I go to a full turn out on the adjustment screw or am I already out to far. ANYONE

Have tried every combination of adjustment on my '98 ultra.

I do believe the Neutral Nirvana is pretty much unattainable. Occasionally I have heard of someone with no neutral problem. Mine will only find it after moving . Parked....forget it. Best luck I've had is crank in past touching about a turn and then back off and do 3/4 out adjustment. I use Lucas gear oil, just because. Ken.

You may find backing out only 1/2 turn will help. I think with your 3/4 turn out your clutch plates are still dragging making it hard to find neutral.
Going 1 turn out will make it worse.
Still maintain your approx 1/8" cable play

Not this issue, but sometimes, I have found, I need to adjust the clutch again, the exact same way I did it the first time. Dunno. Though when I had those issues, couldn't pull it in.

Thanks for all the replies. Guess I will try the 1/2 turn and see what happens after work.

You gotta adjust the derby cover side.

I changed my oil and had the same issue.
Adjusted it at the bars helped a little.

Finally got back in and backed off the nut behind the derby, N is too easy.

My friction Zone is a little too far out now, bout to readjust, (3rd time) at the front today.

Good luck.

A good friction zone is better than N IMO.

There's No N in Safety!

Yea but when you are sitting at one of those long *** traffic lights it is nice to pop it into n to give your hand a break.

Rick, first things first - select neutral while rolling, whenever you can. That isn't possible every time, by any means, but should become your normal habit. Next, tinker with your clutch adjustment as suggested by Sorce. On my old Evo Glide I have done as he suggests, but in addition have only the slightest slack in my cable.

If you still have problems, there are a couple of other suggestions I can make. Use a high quality aftermarket clutch cable. They are much smoother in operation and certainly helped me, by reducing effort at the lever. Swap your clutch plate set for Barnett Kevlar plates, steels and all. Between those two I have greatly improved my ole lady.
