Previous owner wanted $5200 and lives just a few blocks from me. He had an aftermarket but color matched Razor tourpak for it, as well, luggage rack, two windshields, Powervision 3 tuner, Original headlights and turn signal lens covers. Long story short I took it for a test drive on Sept 17, and bought it. Brought it home and checked the fluids/brake pads. PO had installed some Chinese bluetooth speakers, that when riding without a windshield made it look like huge silver boobs. I putted around on it for a week and then started looking into it deeper. This thread is like one from Brandon (stealing his idea). I will be chronicling the changes and/or updates to the bike. Anyone out there with an 04 FLHR that has any tips or things to look out for please let me know. |

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...179031919.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...9189343ec.jpeg Sept 25, Removed the speakers and mess of wires installed, the cupholder and phone holder. Adjusted the clutch cable which was completely tight at the lever. Adjusted primary chain tensioner, remembering why I love that the modern H-D's have automatic adjusting tensioners. Removed the sticker on the tinted windshield the PO installed. Removed the tour pack and stored it in the garage. If anyone is looking for a Sierra red tourpak (aftermarket) hit me up. Took her for a spin around the neighborhood, everything felt perfect, again noting the bike isn't loud for having V&H true duals and rinehart 3.5 mufflers. Came back home and drained the oil, as I really wanted to get into the cam chest and inspect the cam chain tensioners. Opened it up after about an hour of fighting the bracket for the right side front jug's pipe. The cam chest was very clean, so I looked at the outer tensioner and found some mild pitting, use the harbor freight bore scope for the inner and found the same. Not bad for 25ish thousand miles on the clock. Buttoned her all back up with a new gasket and oil/filter. Lastly found the reason the bike is so quiet, the PO had put in some heavily wrapped baffles in the mufflers, which I removed. She now sounds like a Harley. Almost obnoxious... almost. |
Boobs.... The only thing we don't want chrome plated lol.. I look forward to seein what you do in the future.

Took the old girl out for a ride today and about 15 miles into the ride, got an engine light, then about a minute later a battery/charging light. The lights would both go out, then as I'd go faster, the lights would come back on again, and over and over as I rode home. I believe I have a voltage regulator that is failing, based on the symptoms. Ran a diag when I got home and sure enough, p0562 (System voltage low), and a b1007 (Ignition Line Over-voltage Instruments), I could also see in the garage the lights dim and brighten. I'm fully charging the battery tonight and will do a complete charging system investigation tomorrow. Joys of buying a used bike.

Sure looks a lot better minus the hooters.

Thank you rubberguy

Good looking bike. How did you make out with the charging system issue?

Take a look at Cycle Electric. I went thru a couple of regulators on my '06 then replaced the stator and regulator with Cycle Electric. No more issues. Nice lookin ride and a sweet find. A set of Andrews TW21's will wake it up if it's still stock.

I'll check them out for sure! Sadly I haven't had time yet (work/life) to do a diag, but the battery has been on the charger the last few days. I'll diag this evening for sure. I woke last night and remember two half washers that came off the battery terminals when I unplugged the silver boobed Bluetooth setup the PO installed. I found I had some washers available in the bottom of an old toolbox that I'll try to see if it's a battery issue. I know there is some aftermarket brand battery in the bike, the half washer thingy was an old trick to make a battery make better connection back in the day. I'll be looking at cam grinds in about 10k miles when it's time for tensioners for sure. |
