Default 73 electra glide electrical issues

Hello,
I picked up a 73 electra glide over the winter and have puttering away at it. It has been sitting for awhile. The left front and rear running light isn't working. The signal works though. So after removing the headlight I realized there was a lot of electrical tape and wire nuts. I've been chasing my tail for the last couple of weeks trying to figure this seemingly "little" issue out. I'm not a mechanic but very handy. Does any one have a blown up wiring diagram for this year bike? or any suggestions? I've been trouble shooting but just keep pulling my hair out Lol. Thank you for your help or any suggestions.

I cannot speak specifically to 1973, but in 1970 the front and rear turn signals are just that, turn signals. They are NOT running lights like modern bikes, only blink when signals being used. No running light function.

PS we have a Classics/Shovelhead section, you probably will get more responses over there. Good luck.

I have the exact same bike. And I had the exact same problem when I got it. So print out that diagram above and take it to an office supply store and have them blow it up to 18 x 24". Now take it and paste it to a big piece of cardboard. It's a fairly simple diagram. Just follow each wire from point to point and make sure it all goes where it's supposed to. I had a mess with mine. I wired it all back to bone stock including the connection points. You can make some notes on the diagram and highlight the areas you've checked the wiring on. Take your time. its not hard on the older bikes.

I got the same advice from Dan (Twizted) and it's a great idea.

I have a '74 FLH and when I got her the tail light, brake light and head light did not work. Ended up being bad corroded switches in the switch housing on the handlebars. Put a new wiring harness in, cleaned up all the wiring that I could, and mine had 4 circuit breakers, 3 of them under the dash around the ignition. Replaced those with new and everything works good now.

Like Architect said, check out the Shovelhead sub forum. Those guys that frequent that forum know their stuff....
