Thanks for the update 211chuck. Sounds like a troubleshooting nightmare for you having all those techs looking for the problem. Since mine was built towards the end of production......i'm hoping i will be spared from this crankshaft issue.

Ill bite and say that once in a while I notice the clutch lever snapping back on decel. I thought maybe it was me losing my mind, but maybe not. Any chance its torque loading on the engine mounts and pushing on the cable under load, and releasing when letting off the throttle? Curious if this happens on softails or dynas.

I've never noticed it but will try to remember to look next time I'm out. My guess is it's got to do with the mainshaft thrusting on the helical-cut gears. I'm also thinking since in 6th the power's not leaving the mainshaft that it won't do it in that gear.

Considering Harley made a bazillion bikes last year with the 96 engine, and this is the first I've heard of a crank problem with one, I won't be losing any sleep over it...

I seem to remember an article by Donny Peterson in American Iron. He said that all the helical gear teeth point on one direction and this loads the torque in one direction and when you decel it moves the clutch lever. Don't know how bad this as this is all I remember. I have to see if I still have that issue. As for the cranks my local dealer tech said they see alot of cranks with runnout more than spec. like .002 to .004. Doesn't seem like HDs quality control is where it should be.

ORIGINAL: 211Chuck

#2 My clutch lever would pop out to the mounting pertch when I closed the throttle from day one also.
My '07 SG does this to a some degree, as did my '96 RK for the nine years I owned it, which I put 106k miles on before trading in. I don't always notice this behavior, but I've always considered it normal.
