Default Derby Cover

I'm trying to get my derby cover off and it seems that the "star screws" are on there very tight. I've already bent two wrenches. Does anyone know what size wrench I need for them, has anyone else run into this kind of trouble?

yep. get a torx bit and use on a hand "impact" driver. it is a tool that you put the bit on one end, and hit with a hammer on the other. get a good quality torx bit so that it doesn't strip or break.

I use a T-27 on a 1/4" rachet to break & torque. Same size as fairing screws.

I'll definatly try that out. I think I may have stripped the screw before, any suggestions getting it out?

I stripped one out on mine. I was able to take a small file and put a notch in the screw head and then with a srew driver and a hammer backed it out. Good thing the new derby cover comes with new screws.

i've drilled the heads off before. use a good bit, and drill slowly. once you get the derby cover off, the rest of the stud is removeable with your fingers.

I have been there and done that. Use a drill bit comparable to the head size or one size bigger. Drill slowly and the head will pop off of the screw. You can then pop the cover off and use some vise-grips to get the rest of the screw out. Be sure and replace the screws with chrome or stainless one's. Good Luck

Yes. This is the best-way to fix it. The old covershould not get damaged with this method, buteven if itdoesyou should consider the alternative of replacing the primary...OUCH.
Replace the derby cover with the one of your choice while your at it. I like the Skull cover myself....
