Default Trike Conversions

I recently lost a good friend of mine to cancer. His wife doesn't want to sell his bike (2006 Electraglide Classic) and really misses riding. She is not strong enough ar tall enough to handle this bike and asked me to post this question in regards to converting the Electraglide to a trike so she can drive it in her late husbands memory. So with that said, which are the better trike conversions and are they bolt on or do they involve serious fabrication? What would be the approximate cost of a conversion both in kit form (if available) and a completed out the door bike? She also wants reverse installed. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

The Trike Shop makes a great trike, with independent rear suspension, and reverse. They are a little bit longer than many other trike kits. They also offer a different triple tree which helps in steering.

Two of my local friends have them, and love them. Here's one of them, made from a wrecked Gold Wing, on Sturgis Main street.

Would suggest sending Shovelhead Bob a PM/email.

He's very experienced on trikes, and you can take his advise to the bank!

Good luck,

Actually, Shovelhead Bob is in Spearfish, South Dakotathis week at the Lehman Trike plant. He's been messin' with them for over a year. He likes them!

I was disabled 31 years ago. I thought my biking was over. Then I investigated trikes and sidecars. Finally, I selected a trike and I love it. I suggest looking into the Lehman Conversions. Also, wait until 2009 (rumored) Harley will be building Lehman right from the factory. Lehmans are DOT approved. There are a bunch of other conversions like Champion, California Sidecar and etc. Check them all out. There are used trikes around for reasonable prices. If you were to convert your bike with a Lehman Conversion it would be around 13K for the basic conversion (may be cheaper for an Electra Glide Classic). IMHO I believe the Lehman Conversions are all around the better conversions (I own one so you be the judge). You can add all sorts of extras to the 13K but it will cost more. For a lady the triple tree may be needed for ease of steering. Steering is different for a trike. Point the wheel in the direction you want to go. Trikes and sidecars handle so much differently than bikes I would suggest taking a safety course to learn the differences. They handle so much differently the state of Washington has made them an endorsement in their own.One of the things you might want to check before buying a trike is insurance. Some insure them (expensive), some don't insure them. I know a lot of trikers that are driving them on bike insurance, but when they have an accident they won't be covered. Good luck with the search and selection. If you need help drop me an email.

I dont know the name maybe someone can help out but someone makes a kit that adds two outside wheels to the bike that would probably be a little cheaper if cost is an issue.

Saw a trike by the folks http://www.mysterydesigns.com/index.html while at Thunderbeach. Woman who owned it had also lost her husband in an auto accident. Trike was damn sweet and quite reasonable. Check them out! She had the Vette style body on hers.

JC650,

You might be thinking of the 'training wheels' conversion. If I remember correctly, as you gain speed they retract. I asked about cornering and was never given answer so I stopped looking at them. Maybe someone else has more information about them.

I saw something on a web site recently about those "Training wheels" I have no idea how they handle but the site says the go on and off in 15 min. They start at $4,000. I was looking at them cause the wife would like to try the front seat for a change but is afraid of the weight of the bike.
