When I took my IDS bowl out of the sealed box it had even larger ripples than what appear in your pic. The ripples on mine went clear through the casting and could be seen on the inside of the bowl. I was not happy and exchanged the unit. The replacement bowl looked great.
When I posted my concerns here on the Forum a couple of months ago, some told me it was normal for castings to have marks like these. Even the IDS cut-away model that Harley was showing in Daytona at Bike Week had ripples on the back side. (I felt them and pointed them out to the rep.) When I questioned the rep, he said there were a few problems with the earliest run of castings.
I don't know of an actual IDS failure, but I didn't want to run the chance of the bowl grenading at highway speeds. If the ripples on mine didn't show up on the inside of the unit, I may have been convinced to install it.
It's easier for a dealer to give the infamous "they all do that" comment than to honestly address the problem. Test your dealer and see if he's willing to address your concerns. Report back on what he does.
Since I installed it myself I decided the dealer would likely not do much for me so I went out and pulled the rear wheel tonight. It looks like the ripples I felt were just casting marks and IMHO this thing is the crappiest piece of pot metal I think I have ever seen. There are what appear to be "casting fractures" all over it. I did not really pay attention to it when I installed it but I decided to go ahead and put the original pulley back on, I never really had any of the problems the IDS was supposed to fix anyway so I suppose I wasted my money. I feel much better now that its removed and I may take the bowl into the dealer and ask them if HD will replace it.......its only about $15 at zanottis anyway.
I had a couple of those ripples on mine as well ,I bought it from zanottis and I live in Canada so sending it back for a replacement wasn't really an option,so it is installed on the bike now ,I'm not to concerned about it ,don't think it should hinder performance any,and once it was on and I couldn't see it anymore I forgot about it.
I took the hub by the dealer today and they said it was ok. They also told me to use RED locktite on those bolts.......do I really want to do that? And do I need to remove my stock pulley that I used blue locktite and 65lbs of TQ on its bolts and redo it with RED?
