Runaway Throttle -- Scarry
I had the same problem on my new '08 Ultra. Cruise control when rocker switch was "on" and the cruise control was engaged would suddenly surge wide-open. Applied front brake every time and it would disengage. Got so bad that the cruise control would engage by itself if the rocker switch was "on". Dealer spent a few hours with MOCO trying to figure out what was causing the problem. Took about a week, but they replaced the whole CC mechanism. Has worked well since. PM me if you need name of tech and local dealer that worked on my bike. ...btw, my local dealer never doubted that what I was telling them was accurate even though there were no ecm codes.
I have had the almost same problem but on an 2006 FLHXi. Still waiting for them to fix it. Going to try a differant dealership. The already replaced the brain for the cruise.
Mine once it starts to accelerate in cruise it keeps accelerating the only way to stop it is twisting the throttle backwards. Neither of thebrakes, the clutch or the on/off switch phases it.

Hate to throw this out, but had a 1997 Ultra that did the same thing. Would start accelerating on it's own when the cruise was on, dealer never did figure it out.
I like the posts who call it too new.
It's like those darn new hydraulic brakes.
I appreciate the comments from those who have experience with this problem and welcome those to speculate based on there own experiences.
I don’t think the problem is the TBW but have a strong suspicion the problem lies in the CC system itself; be it a switch, wire defect, or sensor. I am confident I understand the use and operation of the system to include the various methods of; turning the system ON/OFF, setting/resuming speed, and various methods of disengaging the system as well as how to stop/shutdown the bike.
That being said…
As I’ve indicated earlier, the bike is stock with a few cosmetic mods, tail light combiner, and aux lights (all installed by the dealer prior to delivery). When the throttle takes-off, it’s always been initially with the rocker switch-“ON†and CC set. The runaway usually happens after the CC has been engaged for a while. It’s happened with and without my hands on the grip, so I haven’t been bumping it. It has always responded to my command to disengage, be it with clutch, brake, throttle roll-off, or the rocker switch.
My dealer has had the bike for 5 day and still hasn’t found anything thus far but I don’t think they “cruised†it on the interstate (26 miles away). I think they may have just been doing around town checks where they’re above 30mph. I’ve gotten some helpful suggestions from a HDFORUM member that I’ve passed on to the dealer and will be following up on it today.
Maybe Harley willpull a rabbit out of their hat like they didwith the IDS for '07-'08 bikesfor the Die by Wire setup for the '09 models you guys can retro fit.
That way you can ride your quiet bike AND be able to live to tell about it.[sm=icon_rofl.gif] [sm=escape.gif]
No throttle problems, no cruise problems...love the cruise on the interstate..
This is my sixth Harley and the absolute best one yet..
Brakes are great...love those Brembos..the ABS gives me piece of mind and I have already had to engage when an idiot didn't see me.
The throttle is actuallymaybe more responsive than my old cable (which admittedly I didn't adjust often).
The extra gallon in the tank is great...
Other than being a little (OK, maybe a lot) warmer in parade type traffic than my 04 carbed Fatboy, this bike is a much better bike.
If both those stories are true, sounds like two more cases of riders having a malfunctioning clutch also. [sm=lol.gif] I'm not letting the bike "take" me anywhere I don't want to go. These things are not automatics; pull the clutch

I appreciate the comments about TBW problems ....... I think there is a lot of "the sky is falling" panic going on here and this panic is causing way more problems than TBW is.
TBW only came up when the anti-FBW vocal minority decided to highjack the discussion.
2008 FLHX..3700 miles...ABS, Cruise...

I do notice the A/F ratio is a little richer than it was on my 07 Dyna Superglide. Gas mileage is down a little @ 38-44mpg. It rides better than the 07 engine as there is no "lean surging" as there was on the 07. The IDS is great, as are the brakes. No issue with TBW as it works just like it had a cable. My cruise works fine except I notice if I bump the throttle grip the cruise kicks off. Fine with me. Better than "can't get it off". I, too, wonder about why anyone would let any cruise control kill them. I was taught, that in an emergency, grab both levers and good things will happen.
