I'm a long time reader of this forum but this is my first post.

When coming to a stop after down-shifting and breaking idle,&nbsp\\;I hear a knocking sound as the engine shakes a bit more when breaking idle.&nbsp\\; The idle may go down to 800rpm for a second or two before returning to 950-1000rpm.&nbsp\\; During this low idle couple of seconds, i hear a clunking sound which I think may be coming from inside the fuel tank.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;When the idle comes back to 950-1000 the rattling stops.&nbsp\\; i don't think the sound is coming from inside the engine as I can make the knocking happen when sitting on a decline with the front break engaged.&nbsp\\; I put my ear to the fuel tank and the sound is louder.

Have any of you experienced this before?&nbsp\\; What could be loose in our around the immediate area of the fuel tank?&nbsp\\; Any insight is greatly appreciated.&nbsp\\;

Will the bike make the sound.. bike not running and shaking bike either fore and aft or side to side?

 

My gas cap (chrome cover, not the actual plastic cap) had some slop in it when I first got my bike, allowing it to rattle under at certain idle speeds.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; Have you tried simply pushing down on your chrome gas cap lid when the noise occurs?

I fixed mine by simply placing a dense foam spacer on the underside to keep it under load when the cap was closed.

I found the issue.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
There is indeed something inside the fuel tank taping the lower right part of the tank near the seat.&nbsp\\; This only occurs when the tank is 1/2 full or less.&nbsp\\; I filled it up yesterday and the noise completely stopped.
&nbsp\\;
Is there a fuel pickup or gauge apparatus in that area that could be loose or slightly out of spec that allows it to hit the tank?&nbsp\\; I'm taking it to the dealer in about a week to let them have a listen and hopefully fix.

I'm guessing that the fuel gauge float is hitting the inside of the tank.

Last weekend I had a dealer take a listen.&nbsp\\; They heard the sound but said that if they got inside the tank and didn't find anything wrong that the hours would be on my dime.&nbsp\\; The guy even went as far to say that it might be some top-end noise traveling up through the tank - BS.&nbsp\\; I told him that the sound goes away when the tank is full but that didn't seem to get through too well.&nbsp\\; Plain and simple - I don't think they wanted to mess with it.

So - I'm letting it go.&nbsp\\;

 

i just replaced my tank and took out the fuel pump from my old one. it could be one of two things .your float could be hitting the tank or there is a regulator attatched to the fuel pump that has a clip on it to hold it in. its very easy to pull it up and check. just make sure you buy the new screws to put it back together they have a seal on every screw that smashes down as you tighten them up if you use the old ones you have a chance of leaks.

Another option would be to find a dealer that isn't a greedy hack.&nbsp\\; There are still a few (very few) that are interested in helping their customers.
