Default Loose front shifter lever

Hey everyone,

I have an 07 Road King that has a loose front shifter lever. It is well lets say floppy. I checked the allen bolt and it's fine (completly tight) Do I need to remove it and grind the groove larger so it can tighten down more?

I had the same problem on mine when I brought it home. To fix I pulled both levers, ran a tap through both sets of threads, and reversed the levers front and back. It's been almost 2 years and they're still tight.

Are you still under warranty? If so have the dealer fix it.

Yes I am still under warranty, I just thought if it were easy I could just do it myself. Maybe I will try and if it's a problem I will go to the dealer

The boss is the case cover that the shaft runs through has two bushings in it. The shaft and bushings should be lubed once in a while. Some riders drill and tap the boss and install a zerk fitting to make greasing easy. If the bushings are worn just pull the shaft out and drive the old ones through the case using a 11/16 driver or rod. The new bushing are inexpensive and just drive in from the front of the case. Easy to do. New bushings installed and everything tight, good to go.

Fairly common problem, that left unfixed will wear down the splines.

Default sloppy shifter

Best thing I've found that works well is to take the shifter off, and clean the shaft and the shfter hole groves good then put green Locktite on the shaft and reattach the shifter, let it cure over night, and it will not come loose again till you are ready to take it off. I've done this on five different bikes and none have come loose.

My 07 does the same thing. It has nothing to do with the boss. I haven't measured it, but I suspect the inner section of splines where the front lever attaches is a bit narrower than the outer portion.

If you try to "check" the tightness of the front lever with an allen wrench it probably won't budge. But, if you put a tork wrench to it and snug to recommended tork it'll move quite eazily. Put some good threadlock on it before you do.

If you let it flop it will wear down the splines.

I have this same problem. I took both shifters off and nothing looked real funky. I expected to see that the grooves or whatever on the shaft were stripped, but they didn't look like it to me. I put everything back together and it's no better. I tighten that allen bolt on the shifter as tight as possible and it doesn't make the shifter tight on the shaft.

Your solution sounds like the easiest and I think I'll try it! What about blue locktite? I already have some of that around. Would that work well? Do I put quite a bit on the shaft, then reinstall everything and let it cure overnight and I'm good to go?
