Default Engine pinion shaft runout

I am considering installing a set of Andrews gear drive cams myself. I read that engine pinion shaft runout is critical. My bike only has 7000 miles on it. Is runout related to miles or is it simply how it was assembled at the factory?

The max runout I ever use is .004. Even then, I don't like it. I stry to stick to .0035 and under. If U have the '07, your chain drive cams and tensioners are much better than previous versions. All the 07 up bikes I do, most HQ103's, all use the stock system. No issues whatsoever...........so far.

Crankshaft runout has nothing to do with miles and everything to do with crankshaft assembly as well as how the bike has been ridden. You can sissor a crank by abusive riding practices, but I think you would have to abuse an engine to extremes for this to happen. As far as factory crank assembly out of spec for runout, I think factory specs border on absurd! I think anything over .002 runout should be a reject, unfortunately the MOCO thinks otherwise. If you are installing a gear drive, crank runout should be less than .003 or you are asking for trouble.

Sorry, BTW the crankshaft u have determines the runout u have to live with. Mileage really has nothing to do with it.....some are good, some bad, some will go bad. We didn't start seeing these issues at large until the cast stroker crank in the early 07 bikes. There is no way of knowing.

I wouldn't change an '07 to gear drive unless you are building a big motor. You've already got the "good" tensioners and oil pump, just change the cam and you're good to go.

Question Crank Runout tolerances

Hi All,
Bought my first ever Harley two months ago - a 2007 CVO Road King with just under 1600km on the clock.
At 1800km, the engine poured oil and it was fount that the crank case sensor had disintegrated.
Engine stripped - under warranty, and crank run out was found to be:-
Right side: .004"
Left side: .001"
Harley said this was within tolerance and was not a factor.
End result: New oil pump - it was scored and new bearings throughout.
I was told that the original sensor was faulty and collapsed because of heat. paricles then blocked the oilways and the crank case pressure blew the sensor out.
Can anyone advise if those tolerances are OK
I am going to get Timkens fitted on the rebuild and the HD 'lefty bearing'.
Hopefully that would prevent a reocurrence.........
Any advice as to the way to go would be appreciated -by the way I am in Singapore and parts are +50% - 70%
Cheers
