Can't get Derby Cover off
Hi Guys I have an 08 Ultra Clasic and I just purchased a new Derby cover to replace the sock one. While I was taking the screw out 3 came out with ease and two I can not budge. I sprayed them with WD-40, Liquid Wrenck... still stuck in place. IF anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.
Thanks and ride safe. Psycho Mike |
Pick up an impact driver...hand tool. Several good whacks should loosen the screws. Try using a center punch first to shock the screws a bit. Another method is to cut a slot at 9 and 3 o'clock with a dremmel tool or chisel. You then strike downward at the edge with a punch to break them loose. Love them Torx screws, huh? Should be T27's.

Correct! and when you put it back together, go down to Ace Hardware and get some chrome allen head bolts and replace the torx ones. it makes it a breeze to remove the derby cover when changing the primary oil. http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l1...DSC03433-1.jpg |
Thanks for all the quick reponses. I'll have to try them tomorrow leaving for work in a couple.

If you stripped the head, get a dremmel tool with a cutting blade and slice a slot in it. Pound in a screw driver blade (or better yet, a screw driver bit on a ratchet) and remove it that way. I wound up having one bolt get virtually welded in place (darn stealer must have torq'ed it down pretty hard). Had to do the a fore mentioned, used my honkin-big screwdriver insert blade with a ratchet to get the good leverage to remove it.
The previous posts are aboslutely correct, get the better chrome allen bolts. J&P sells a kit for them as well. |
my buddy showed up with his 07 outer primary and 3 stripped torx. we had to drill and use easyouts to get them out! +1 on the allens

Yeah, had the same happed on two of the five torx when I did my 10k. I'd used the proper size torx driver, but they stripped anyway. Tried an impact tool, but they wouldn't budge.
As mentioned above, we used a Drimmel and cut a notch in the side of the torx screw head. Then used a sharp chisel and hammer to tap the screw around until it frees up enough to turn easy, then spin it out the rest of the way with some vice grips. Throw away the crappy Torx screws and get you some stainess steel Alan (hex) head screws: 1/4-20 x 5/8. They look better than the Torx and make accessing the primary cover so much eaiser. |
