Derby cover hot

Finished a 200 mile ride today, happened to touch the derby cover about an hour after finished and it was hot!! Not as hot as the pipes, but hot enough that I couldn't keep my hand on it for very long. this is my 2nd Harley, I've owned it for over a year and never noticed this before. Of course, I changed the crank case and tranny fluid myself but, because of stripped screws on the derby cover (done by the dealer at 1000K service) let them change the oil in the primary. Does the derby cover normally get hot? bike is 2008
EGC, stock. thanx.

hold your hand on it for 20 seconds right after you shut it down, then try it after 1 hour and report back :D

Yes, the derby cover and everything on the engine usually gets hot.

When the temperature of something reaches about 113 degrees is the point people can not touch for more than a second or so. That temperature is not very high for an engine and surrounding equipment. My derby cover gets quite hot and it is no indication of a problem.

thanx fellas...dumb question I know, but never noticed it before and my naturally suspicious mind was afraid the dealership didn't put proper amount of oil in...ride safe.

Try touching it after some police training! You want to talk about HOT!! All of the clutch slipping that is taking place generates LOTS of heat. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have noticed that with the synthetic it does not get as hot as it used to.

Any part of the engine is going to get hot.
