how many hours of labor did u get charged?
The dealer has my bike installing a 103" stage ii kit. They were offering a discounted hourly labor rate for a few months. They are charging me 10 hours labor to do the install. I thought i have read some of you guys saying that you were charged 8 hours. This should be a set number of hours. they reduced there normal shop rate of 70 per hour to 59.50 per hour. 70 X 8 is 560$ 59.50 x 10 is 595$ am i a dummy or what?
8 hours is what I was told today by my indy....
If they truly do good work wouldn't get too bent on 2 hours labor .. rather pay 600.00 once and never have to worry than 400.00 and have problems, then always worry thereafter..
i agree jay, i just dont want to be taken advantage of.
I was quoted 10hrs as well for my 95" upgrade. Iam sure some has to do with, what all you are having done.
Mike. |
10 hours to do pistons?
Are you kiddin' me? My Indy charges 6 hours...and he actually gets it done in about 5. Then again, he's a wrench. Those guys at dealerships are for the most part, fresh out of MMI. |
I have been quoted 10 hrs when doing big bore + cams. Big bore = 5 and cams =5. Both dealers and indy's have quoted the same hours so I guess that what the "book" shows.
wow dealer here in Canada charges 10 hours at $110 /hour Cdn. plus 3 hours for dyno
$1500 total, about $1200 US |
I guess the cams, clutch upgrade, tuner, exhuast, air cleaner, and the rest all just happen after the 5 hrs. Iam tired of the "my Indy is better than your HD mechanic" line. My HD mechanic builds for the V-rod racing team, that has won several titles, so I think he knows what he is doing.

Some are lucky to have VRod builders, while others have run of the mill Cert. H-D mech's. I'm lucky to have all of the above (except the VRod thing) within 50 miles of me. |

The original poster of this thread makes no mention of cams, clutches or tuner. Logically, the exhaust and air cleaner come off with the cylinders. Perhaps you don't understand that a big bore is nothing more than pistons/cylinders? Apparrently you can't fathom the concept of my original post, "Those guys at dealerships are for the most part, fresh out of MMI." Any idea what "for the most part" means? It in noway insinuates "all." As for your wrench building VRod motors...thats nice, but I'm not impressed. |

Now I'm really pi$$ed. My dealer (a dealer, definitely not mine) in Fife, Washington told me minimum 12 hrs., @ $90/hr.= $1080 minimum. Same chuckleheads that are trying to get $2000.00 over MSRP on a new Street Glide from me. Never did get that warm fuzzy feeling from those guys.

I would never deal with "Destination".................... |
Ouch...Piggy hurt my feelings. I guess my HD built bike is nothing but junk
Dealer quoted me 12 hours for big bore and cam change.
I just talked to the local dealer about new cams, gear drive, and an upgrade to 95" and he said it would take "about a day or a little more". I interpreted that as 8 to 12 hours labor. The price I was quoted was $2200 for parts and labor, tax not included. Is that about the same as what your doing (103" instead)?
I would never deal with "Destination".................... But I WILL do business elsewhere. Seems that a few people I talked to share those same feelings. |
The 103" Stage II kit comes with cams, clutch, ac, and tune. No need to mention them as extra.
98.00 per hour & going up in nyc
wow, 98 per hour.....thats good money!
I have not done the 103 kit so can't coment on the hours however just be glade your not in NY/NY as I would give anything for $70 /hr labor rate the dealers here are getting $89 /hr.
I was quoted 14 hrs today for my 07 roadking, that doesn't include any dyno time. $2,000 plus tax and no mufflers for a stage II w/cams
Yeah not hard to figure out which dealar your talking about in lil ol Fife, WA LOL. The parts guys in Fife are a cool bunch to deal with but not impressed with the dealership as a whole. I live in nearby Puyallup and must say that I can get to either of their two stores in about 15 minutes, but the family (Me, Wife, Fater-In law and brother In-law) all purchased our bikes at Northwest Harley easliy a 45 minute freeway drive. Awesome folks if your interested.
well its 9 degrees today and my bike is done . they arent going to let me have it until they can make a test ride to check it out. i have to wait for that before i get the bill. i know the labor is going to be $595.50 just ready to get it back!
Um . . .
Good info living in fed way/auburn, and am looking to buy in the future! |
sounds like I got a deal
When I first went to the dealer to talk about pricing I was asked to return the next day for a build list and install charge. I believe that everything is negotiable so I first asked for a discount on parts. I was able to get a 10% discount on parts and the install cost dropped from 11 hours to 8. This only sounds average until you hear what I had installed. Rinehart true duals, gear driven cams, new cylinders and pistons, dynotune with super pro race tuner.
A quote of 10 hrs is about right for big bore and cams. For those getting new exhaust at the same time, there should be no labor charge, same for gear drive, no additional charge as you are already in there.
Piggy, I agree with your MMI statement and that most, but not all are just parts changers. And my06NT, no one said your build is junk, you did. I really get a kick out of those that get their panties in a wad over such a statement. My local dealer has a master tech, very good and a few good techs, but also some of the parts changers. It all depends on the dealer. That being said, had two tires mounted and the HK replaced under warranty last year, they put the rear axle cam eccentric on upside down, the rear axle was cocked. When puting the outer fairing back on, they left wires hanging and pinched them. I really like the service managers, good guys and straight shooters but sometimes, you just dont know who will touch the bike and what the results will be. That is why I do all of my own work. If it wasn't for the radio warranty issue, the bike would not have been back to the dealer. |
good lesson there. always inspect your bike carefully when you get it back from anyone who has done some sort of repairs or upgrades.
whats really good is they were going to charge me for my 1000 mile service. i said, dont you have to do all the same things when you install the 103 kit? they took that part off the ticket.
