Firstly, 10 or 12" bars are not "apes". Ridiculously tall bars [ape hangers] on any bike are, well, ridiculous in my opinion... What you are asking is likely workable and may even end up aesthetic.
Now I must opine............................................. ................................................
"Apes", what is the actual end result? To me, they make you look like a disciple of Darwin .
Improved handling.......... myth. (if you disagree, ask yourself why all GP or drag bikes have low, as in clip on bars)
Improved comfort........... myth. (ride one across state)
Improved bad *** image........... perhaps, but largely in your own mind or maybe the eyes of a hard bodied chick you saw last week, one third your age and no clue. Dreamland.
Improved aesthetics? Again, see above. Only on certain bikes, raked (and otherwise good looking) choppers perhaps, Captain America comes to mind, perhaps indeed the only real one.
Badass Baggers....... :-o. No such real bike really (that will be around 20 years from now). Face facts, you will (quickly) grow tired of anything equal to much less above your shoulder, it was a generation gap gone mainstream. A dieing fad, no more, no less.
Improvements.......... ? See above.
