SE 255 Cams with stock displacement .... Money well spent?
#21
I have to chime in......I had the 103 kit with 255 cams 87 horse and 105 tq and it was dead after 4500 rpm that was with stock head gaskets. THIS past weekend i went with the 258 cams and the SE metal gaskets (.015 difference) and stock heads and made 97 hp and 101 tq. I hope this helps you.

Seems that a lot of folks really don't like the 255 cams. I don't understand that! I had them put in with the 103 and couldn't be happier. I'm not concerned about running over 5000 rpm since that happens rarely for me. What I care about most is the bottom end torque. The 255's pull very hard from 1800 rpm and up. If you are trying to save money, use the FuelPak and matched V&H exhaust. No dyno time saves a lot of money. The standard settings worked great for me with no pinging, no hard starting, and good milage.

There is a lot of different ways to go with cams. It all depends on your riding style. I looked a hill side, head quarters, s&s and se.
I rarely go above 4,000 rpm's. I tour and ride below 80 mph. I decided to try the SE 255's and keep the engine 96". There are better cams I am sure but they just did not meet my riding style. I wanted something to pull off idle up to say 4,000 rpm's. Thats what I got with the SE 255's. I can hang in with the stock 110 ci and stay beside a 103. The big bore is nothing but tq in the most part and the 255's gave me all I needed.
After 80 mph in 6th is only 2,900 rpms and the bike pulls 6th great now.
I am very happy with the result
Like I said it fits my style of riding, solo or 2 up. mpg went up 2-4 mpg.
