Default Starter Clutch..Which one to buy?

I know I need to install compression releases, but I just trashed my 3rd starter clutch. It's the first one after my warranty expired a week ago. They replaced the starter under warranty 5 weeks ago, but I'm on my own now. BTW, I always bump the starter over before trying to start it, but sometimes it still kicks back...

Any suggestions as to which one will survive until I pull the heads?

dawg,

As always, you are the part guru! It looks like you have to have an account to buy there. Do you know where to buy them online? Or could I buy any clutch that fits that application?

You can probably get one at an auto parts store or even at a Toyota dealer. Just tell them you want a Nippondenso starter clutch for a 92-98 Camry.

I'm putting the 4th starter in my Road King right now. It has just over 22,000 miles. The mechanic found the starter has a small part that was missing that forced the gear out another 1/4' to fully engage. Good Luck

Well, I got it off last night and apart today. The idler gear has a missing tooth. I am going to stop by a starter shop this afternoon and see if they can fix me up....

Well I had no luck finding any auto parts store that had the clutch. That's when I remembered the starter shop that has been around here forever. I called about the clutch and he said bring it in. He said there are some various clutches, so he wanted to see it.

At lunch, I pulled the starter apart and found the idler gear had a tooth missing. So, I left work early and went out there. I showed him the clutch and the broken idler gear. He told me the clutch was fine and sold me the idler gear for $4.00!

Then I found out he rides a bone stock Ultra Classic. He told me he didn't want to deal with any of the problems I was having, he just enjoyed riding..

So, I spent the $4.00 there and another $46.00 at the Harley dealership. I think I made out pretty d@mn well. BTW, I also found out the Harley shop can machine the head for $150.00 and get them done within a day or two...

What years does this clutch fit and is it a perfect match? Big twin only?
