I only have about 18oo miles on my new 06 Ultra. I have an electronic oil temp gauge. I realize that it may not be so accurate, but my temp runs about 234 F when doing city riding and about 217F on highway, I was told that the "true break in period" is about 2,500 miles then I will see that temp drop some more.

Two questions: 1. What should the running temp of the dresser be? 2. Should I remove the lowers?


Any help would be appreciated.

 

The ambient temp effects oil temp. on a 80+/- degree day mine will run close to those temps. I have the hd analog guage.

 

Actually those numbers are about right. Agood synthetic oil likw Amsoil, Redline or Mobile one will lower the temps some. Contrary to popular belief the lowers off will help you stay cooler but not the bike. If you notice, the lowers are designed to channell air to the cylinders in a forced fashion. I have been riding Ultras for over 10 years and have never removed mine. I do run Amsoil and an oil cooler though. I do a lot of long distance high speed touring so the cooler helps. Get a fan if you are looking for city comfort with the temps.

It not sure it makes a difference, since nither the EG standard, EG Classic, and the SG DO NOT come with the lower farings. Just a thought.

 

I have the HD fairing oil temp guage. Yes, about 225 with it's approx 80 air temp. Just above 180 around 70 air temp.

I'll be the first to trade in my Ultra should HD ever come out with a water cooled Ultra.

 

You'll be 2nd! I already told my dealer to put me down for the 1st one. Not so bad now that I put the Fulsac duals on and switched to Mobil 1. But still a hot ride ahead this summer.

 

There is nothing wrong with those temps. You want the oil to get to the temperature of boiling water anyway in order to boil off any water that might condense into the oil from the heat cycling. HD has designed the engine to run at these temps, so stop worring about temps that are 230 and below. Worry about the temperature if the heat management program starts running!

I also have the oil temp gauge. My runs about 112-137.8 depending upon the length of ride and the ambient temperature.




Of course, I kive in Minnesota...

 

I'm wondering what the temp difference could be depending on where the sender is located (in the oil line per the H-D instructions or, in the extra hole in the pan)? Something to think about.
