Tell your Harley mechanic to go back to removing and replacing parts...unfortunately, that's about all most HD Dealer mechanics do anymore. Not their fault, the dealer is chasing the dollar. The dollar is in R/R parts that should have been stock to begin with...
For a high performance Harley motor go to S&S, GMR, R&R, Hillside, T-man, or one of the the many other motor guys. Never ask a Harley Dealer mechanic for advice... My two cents worth.

S&S, GMR?, R&R etc etc are Not now and never will be Harley Motors and should not be confused as Harley Motors.

I've watched people (me included) knock the bottom ends out of Harleys for 45 yrs due to increases in cylinder pressure. Any increases over what the engineers designed the lower end to take will cost you in terms of reliability. To actually assign a number of miles with the modification is interesting as I've seen em puke quick and some last a few years between rebuilds.

While I've never owned anyone's copy of a Harley Motor (S&S etc etc) I don't see where they have addressed the same structural issues that have plagued stroked Harleys since '36.

A good rule of thumb is, leave em stock unless you have plenty of time for tear downs and dont need to ride further then you can push.

I guess some have had difficulties with aftermarket parts and elect to stay stock. I've seen too many "stock" twin cams come apart from either cam followers or bearings to have much confidence in the moto company. I recently road a 99 Twin Cam with S&S internals (116") for over 50K with no failures. And believe me, I ride 'em hard. A good friend bought the new 110 in a SE bike and has had to change cylinders, pistons, cams, and ignition is an attempt to get the motor to NOT run hot. Oh yea, he added twin oil coolers too.
