Default So what's a Hog weigh anyhow?

Got bored at work the other night and with all the discusion about tires and weight ratings I thought I'd see what a Hog really weighed. I've got a 2008 StreetGlide and the factory says 749lb shipped. I've got the normal stuff in the bags(chaps, jacket, gloves, tools ,etc.)and it weighs 25lbs. With 3gal gas and ready to ride, the bike weighs 815 lbs. Front weight was 362lbs and the rear weight was 453lbs. Added my 198lbs to the seat and total weight was 1013lbs. Front weight went up to 420 lbs and the rear weight went up to 593lbs. Factory manual lists the GVWR at 1259 lbs with front GWR at 500lb and rear GWR at 827lb for ALL 08 touring bikes. Don't look like it would take much gear or a passenger to put you over the GVWR.

I may be wrong but dont think so...I dont believe you can weigh the front and back, add them together and get an accurate weight...there is carry over weight from the other end...:>)

you can weigh the bike on 2 scales at the same time and get accurate balance info. That's how it is done at truck stops and portable scales.

I know my 03 weighs 820 "wet" shipping weight is usually with no fuel, and assume gas weighs 6 pounds a gallon give or take so a full tank is 30 pounds,

Weighed the bike on one scale for total weight and 2 scales for the split weight. There was a couple of pounds variance but not really enough to be a problem.

Ive always done it by weighing the front axle only, then pull the rear on and subtract the difference to get the rear weight. Ive been out of the trucking business for a while but I dont think its changed.

In aviation, we calculate weight and balances fore and aft of the CG limit. Very important to know when flying. Don't know where the CG is on my bike, but it certainly could be determined. Anything forward of the CG would be considered the front, anything aft would be considered rear. I never really thought of my bike this way before, but I suppose you could calculate a CG for just about anything.
