Great pictures. The 1984 FLHT has different hangers under bags. Wulfe has the righteous picture as well as the photo by mjdart. I had to change mine to a newer style. (after a muffler fell off and was run over)Try Buds in Austin for old parts. They specialize in that. I would like to have a 2 into one on mine. Very expensive. I will probably try Buds.

If you're dealing with Bud's New, Used and Abused in Austin, say "Hey" to Harley Bob. Tell him Hess sent you. I've known Bob since about 1984 or so.

And I'd bet that you could figure out a way to make an adapter to mount a later style muffler to the earlier style rail. A little time with the MIG and the lathe and I can make about anything.

I used to use a chrome "L" bracket that I cut and spliced a rubber strap from a muffler clamp to hold on the fishtails years ago, the rubber was enough to stop it from breaking and you could barely see it.. I've since changed to the newer saddlebag rail.

Cycle Shack still sells drag pipes that will fit, you just need to change the hanger. I'm not sure if they include heat shields.

Thanks for all the fantastic input. I contacted Hooker regarding their pipes. I purchased an awesome set. They are having an incredible 75% off sale on their motorcycle exhaust. If anyone is in the market you should check them out on their website. I contacted a local Hooker distributor and they wanted $650 for the pipes. I went directly to Hooker and bought them for $180 including delivery! What a deal! They fit excellent and I like the built-in heat shields that cover the entire pipe. They sound great and bolt right up!

Hey, just came across this thread. Was wondering how it ended up looking. I have a mostly stock 84 FLHT, original owner. The rear muffler hangers were one of the first things I changed. Harley realized the ones it came with didn't work and changed to the current style in late 85. Vance and Hines slip ons and a CV carb were the only major changes I made.

If you want to rock a Thunderheader, I'm sure they still make a fitment for an '84. Nothing sounds better IMO. Can't wait to get an old Evo bike.

On edit:

Part #1024, '84-'06
