Question 2005 FLHRCI Tranny shift lever that attaches to shift linkage has play.

On my 2005 FLHRCI Road King Classic the shift lever that is attached to the shift Rod and tranny shaft has a spline in it and a nut to hold it on to the tranny shaft ( Lever is attached to shift linkage behind Inner Primary cover ) has play in it because I believe the spline is wearing somewhat on the shift lever. Is this normal and if not do I have to remove the inner primary to replace the lever because to me it looks like there may not be enough room between the inner primary cover and the tranny to remove the lever? thanks for your help.

Have you tried tightening the screw?

If the the screw is loose, this could create wear at the splines on the shift shaft and also the arm.
The inner primary must be removed to replace the shift arm.
The splines on the shift shaft should also be inspected. If the shift shaft is worn, then the tranny needs to come apart.
Might as well replace the shift shaft seal if you go ahead with the work.

On my bike I had the same thing last year. I was also worried about the splines worn down. What I did is remove the bolt on the shifter arm, put some copperpaste on it, also on the underside of the head of the bolt, and put it back in and torqued it to specs. Now it's tight again. No need to remove the primary for this.
Hope it works for you too.

This happened on a friend of mine's Sportster. He let it go for so long, he had to replace the shifter AND the rod. The teeth were damn near smooth.

Thanks I'll try the copper paste first if that doesn't work I'll have to remove the inner primary. Thanks all for your input

It happened to me earlier this year and put a new bolt in to try first, but that only worked for a thousand miles or so. Ended having to replace the spline and the shifter part and was about 500 with labor. Would've liked to do it myself, but was in mid move and didn't have my tools yet.

@ Sporty87

And.... did the copperslip do the trick?
Just curious.
