There's nothing wrong with a Salvage Titled bike. In order to be issued the Salvage Title, VIN, and register it, the bike has to be 100% corrected, (except for cosmetics) and has to be certified and inspected. The only place it may make you go, "Hmmmm" is on resale - and that guy is thinking the same thing that you are right now....

If you go to crashedtoys.com and check their bikes, they sell some with salvage titles, some with junk titles and some with clear titles. I also read somewhere that some states don't issue salvage titles and if you register a bike there they get a clear title(can't remember where I read it). My insurance company says no problem with full coverage, just insure the bike for the purchasing price(no higher).

If you live in Ohio, Its easy to get a bike retitled. All you have to do is keep all your receipts, Fix it right and take to an Ohio State Highway Patrol inspection station. They will inspect it check your paperwork and issue you a certificate to go to the title beareu. You will get a new title. I have done 2 bikes like that when I lived in Ohio.

It will be cheap going in and you won't get what it's worth going out. They are good if you are like me and keep a bike forever, but if you're looking at what it will be worth done the road then it may be a not be worth it.
Buy it and ride it till it's dead!

This is about the same as Iowa. The real reason for the inspection is a stolen parts check, which is why salvage yards here always put the vin number of the vehicle the parts came off of. I have used several ebay parts and keep a list of item numbers which has never been a problem. I have rebuilt several and you can take $1500 to $2000 off retail price, but still worth it if you buy it right.

My '96 Electraglide Calssic was a rebuild. Had Foremost insurance on it and it was valued at around 13,000 when we lived in Ohio. Which is real good for a '96. But when I moved to SC, Foremost jacked up the price and I switched to the lizard insurance. But the real deal is that rebuilding salvage bikes is a real good deal for someone on a tight budget and cant afford high payments or premiums. Also, It is an excellent way to learn about your bike along the way which helps out in the future. I would do it again.

I wouldnt touch a salvage title car, but with bikes I think its ok as long as you know exactly why it was salvaged in the first place. I would want to know if it was a stolen salvage ( a lot of ins company's pay out on stolen bikes then when recovered they get a salvage title) or a wreck and how bad it was wrecked.

Your right, Ya gotta do some homework on the prospect. Ask alot of questions to the seller. Cover all bases. If possible look at it a couple times.

One very important thing not yet mentioned is PICTURES. Have lots and lots of before and after pics, along with repair receipts and that will greatly help at resale time. Most dealers are not going to give you much for a salvage bike though, but couldn't blame them, salvage bikes are probably their biggest competition.
