Default Primary chain case oil change

I have a 2004 road king. I changed the primary chain oil today for the first time . The manual said the oil capacity is 32 oz. Mine took twice that 64oz. Here's the thing, I know the manual say's to re-fill thru the clutch cover opening, but I filled thru the chain inspection hole first then figured i'd top it off thru the clutch cover opening. Was that wrong? I was figuring it would all go to the same well. This is the only reason I could think of. Or maybe it's an anomally.

Did you have the bike on a level surface and fully upright, not sitting on the jiffy stand?

From the book:

Do not overfill the primary chaincase with lubricant. Overfiling may cause rough clutch engement, incomplete disengagement, clutch drag and/or difficulty in finding nuetral at engine idle.

Chaincase should be filled with the bike in an upright and level position (not on the jiffy stand). Fill through the derby cover. The fluid gets distributed where it needs to go as the bike is operated.

why would you put twice the amount in? 32 oz. is all that is required, the chain goes through a bath and distributes the lube. Drain it and start over. Fact is, I run 75w-90 synthetic grease in my primary and have not had any problems with clutch, primary or adjuster. Run 75w-90 syn in the tranny as well.

Todd,

I to changed my primary oil this weekend on my 05 RK and ended up with the same situation. The service manual says to add 32 ozs. and shows the picture of where they want the fluid level. To get to that level I had to add an additional 20 ozs. What it amounts to is conflicting instructions.

I hope someone can clear this up.

Changed mine yesterday. I have a '01 Road King and 32 oz. was right on the money. Per some previous posts, make sure the bike is upright. It's a little tough to see the level. I had a bright flashlight and a pair of cheaters (glasses) on and one quart put the level where it's supposed to be.

Maybe I should check mine. So far (17,000 miles) I've just dumped in one bottle and buttoned it back up.

i have never tried filling mine, i just dump a quart of synthetic ATF in there. the ATF is formulated for clutch contact though very little. the ATF i feel will cool the clutch housing better than a heavier fluid. fluid is a coolant and a lubricant.

I change all my fluids every 3000 miles and just did it this weekend at 15 k on my 05 Road Glide. I fill it through the inspection cover with 1qt/32oz and button it back up. I have never had any issues with doing it this way and would never ever put more than the recommended 32ozs..

I had the bike gone over by a wrench last month before leaving on a 3200 mile trip and he checked the chain tension and clutch and said eveyrthing looked great so I would say I must be doing the right thing during the fluid changes.

Just my 2 cents
