Okay, Brothers and Sisters,
I am messing with my headlight because my stock bulb on my '07 Road King Classic went out. Bought the Hi Performance (yeah...right) bulb from the dealer and installed it. I can't see the stupid thing in the day time. My passing lights are more noticeable than this stupid thing.
My question is...Inside my headlight housing, there is a domed reflector that slides up and down when the bulb is out. Could this be removed, or is it necessary for proper function of the headlamp on the bike?
AND...would an HID setup utilize this reflector, or is it just in there for incandescent bulbs?
I'm a bit hesitant to get the Sylvania H4ST due to reliability issues.
I had HID installed and they lasted 1 hour. The lights were professionally installed. The lights turned my headlamp lenses white from the heat, the balasts burned out and I sent the whole package back. The manufacture said that the bike didn't generate enough power to use the product. I am now out 450.00 for the install and because of the wires had to be altered, the manufacture will not refund my money.
I run PIAA's in all my stuff. The deal with aftermarket bulbs is that allot of them get up on the kelvin scale. The PIAA's made for motorcycles run from 3800k to 5000k. 4200k is about pure white. The ones I run are at 4100k Anything above that is going to have a blueish tint and be less visible during the daylight hours as sunlight is 5250K. A standard halogen is 3200K. That is why they look yellowish if you have them in your passing lamps with an upgraded bulb in your headlight.
A more affordable Sylvania SilverStar H4 is available at most automotive stores. They are not too blue either.
I use halogen H3s in my passing lamps and the halogen H4ST in the headlight. They are available at most auto parts stores. They are the most bang for the buck. Make sure you get the ST version. It is made for motorcycles (vibration).
HID in my 08 Ultra NO problems what so ever... Less than $70 for the HID including extra's I used to do the install. Now, I did upgrade to the Dual bulb H11/H8 HD set-up prior to installation.
