Didn't ask for the "knock"

Had a dealer do a 103" Big Bore kit with new jugs, pistons and 255 cams. They installed the Stage I download for a 103 -bike ran reasonably well. Contacted Moco about unrelated matter and they suggested that the download was incorrect and should be the Stage II download for 103" w/cams. Went back to the dealer and they gladly did the Stage II download grattis. Trailered the bike home (dealer 200 miles away) took it for a ride and noticed that when the bike got hot and you cracked on the throttle - you could hear a knocking/pinging noise. My question: is it something in the download that is off or does the bike need to be properly tuned to accomodate the Big bore 103 and the Stage II download?? Should I be concerned about this as I would have to trailer it to a dyno (closest one is 400 miles away). I'd appreciate any input on this.

My .02.

If it ran OK with the stage 1, get them to reinstall that and then take it for installation of a proper fuel management device and proper tune. You put big coin into the upgrade, why stop short of fully unlocking the potential?

+1, you need some type of Fuel Management device. SERT, Power Commander, ...something?!

It's essential. You got to stage 2 without doing stage 1.

For warranty reasons I think you will be stuck with that dealer.
Sounds like the bike should have a tuner installed with a dyno.

Many thanks to those that replied.

It's difficult to cyber-diagnose, but it sounds like you are describing pinging.

"If" that is the case, then a Stage I flash would actually exaserbate the issue because the Stage I map has more ingition timing advance.

Your best bet would be a "real" tune with a SEST or TTS on a dyno, by a competent tuner.

I second what PhilM said.

My preference would be TTS, since I'm running it.

But, if your that stuck on warranty work then take it to dealer with a dyno and have them tune it.

The Harley dealer download is a waste of money, all it does is change the timing. Due the the EPA regs they can not alter the fuel management. You need a PC5 or a fuel management system that can change the lean fuel ratios. The 2010 HD Race Tuner is also EPA regulated, and won't do much for fuel ratios.

The new TTS is the way to go, it is nor EPA regulated like the Race Tuner.

Not to sound like a total "bonehead" but can someone explain how the TTS works and what it is exactly. Closed/open, modifys the ECM?? Thank you.
