Default Fill level of Primary..Exact?

I read to fill primary until you see level? I Drained and replaced Primary oil and I can see the level after a quart and a bit more...but it is below the lip of the Primary Cover by 1/2 inch? Is this critical as far as level of oil in there? 2008 FLHX

What year bike? TC96 primaries use 38oz wet, 45 dry. Technically you should have bike upright and when it just covers the bottom of the clutch basket. TC88 primaries used 32oz. Go by the bottom of the clutch basket, not the lip of the primary cover.

Just did mine today -- 07 Ultra -- As Dawg says, my shop manual called for 38 oz in the primary. (45 oz if you pulled the whole cover off.)
It was a bit under the edge of the lip. 1/2" ?? ..I can't say for sure, I didn't look that hard, but it sounds pretty close.

FWIW, the book says that poor clutch operation will happen if you overfill it, but, I'm not an expert so can't really say there.

Same here, I use the clutch plate as my level, when it just touches the bottome of the clutch plate I'm good.

Dawg and Cujo gave good advise. I like your lift.

Default Thanks

Thanks I guess I have it about right... I put in one quart and about 1/5th of another and I can see it touching the bottom of the cluth area.
My lift is just a Cheapo Harbor Freight...but it works great for what I do on the Bike.

My old Evo RK required a few oz. more than a quart and I always used the visual-inspection method when adding oil. On my TC96 I can't easily see the bottom of the clutch basket so I simply use the mfr's recommendation (38 oz.).
