Default Powder Coating over Chrome?

Hi All,

I have several parts that I want to get powder coated black. Most of the parts are currently chromed. Does anyone know if I can powder coat over chrome or am I wasting my time?

No problem....I roughed up my parts with a scotchbrite pad before giving them to the powdercoater

As long as the chrome is NOT starting to 'peel' yet...
Depends on the condition of the chrome. If it's on that '08 or '09, I don't think there should be a problem.

The chrome is perfect. I guess I was just worried about the powder coating 'sticking' properly. I'll try the scotch brite trick before sending out.

I have a question along the same subject. I recently stripped a friend’s bike of all the chrome so he could get it powder coated. I told him that the coater would just bead blast it then powder coat it. The coater told him that he needed to have the chrome stripped then bring it back. He asked about the bead blasting and was told it will flake off if its not completely removed. Is there any truth in this?

I hope the previous posters are correct. I can imagine the cost of chrome removal could be staggering.

I have done most of my bike, I have had the chrome ruffed up a bit and had it start flakeing off.

the best thing to do is take it to a place that re-chromes bumpers still and have them dip it and strip off all the chrome then take it in to be powder coated.

The guy who does all of my stuff both on my bikes and at work always blast (either bead or sand) everything before he powder coats any parts. He says he has less problems this way, its a little more costly/time consuming but better.
