I would like a plug and play replacement of course with the ability to use my controls, water proof with some strong feature capabilities. Any reccomendation out there. I looked at Biketronics and they have several unit they sell

Biketronics also sells a new multi-brand Retro Radio controller so you can put in an Alpine marine unit or any other brand you want. I just ordered the Sony marine head unit yesterday, its a proven product that I know will be 100% compatible with the handlebar controls. Give them a call maybe they can give you some good suggestions if you don't want to go with the Sony line.

So it sounds like the marine type is a strong recomendation so far in a Sony brand or Alpine. Any particular model you can point me too and why. Are these retro kits required for all unit or just some specific models? And lastly I assume these units are all plug and play and no special wiring cuts or fabraciated brackets for installation are required.

thanks

I have the Sony MarineCDX- M60UI with Hawg wired installation kit - amp - speakers, I like their stuff a little better, go to crutchfield.com they are an electronics store, look at radios ,decide what you want and then shop that unit on amazon.com, everyone wanted $199 for my head unit, bought it on amazon.com for $142 to the door

I believe HD changed to the Harmon Kardon radio in 06, 05 and below have the Radio Sound. The factory connectors are different.

You can easily install an HK head unit in a pre-'05 bike. The 23-wire connector that plugs into the back of the head unit is the same for Harman Kardon and Radio Sound head units with the exception of the wire that provides the vehicle speed information to the head unit for the Automatic Volume Control to work. If you don't care about the AVC, it's a plug and play swap.

If you want AVC, you can splice a wire at the speedo on '04 and '05 models to provide the speed information to the HK head unit. It's explained in this thread; just scroll down to the AVC description:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...tra-glide.html

'03 and older models don't have a serial data wire inside the fairing like the '04 and '05 models, so I don't know what you'd use for an HK install on those to have the AVC function. All other functions would be the same, however.

The 23-wire connector that plugs into the back of the HK and RS radios is the same and has the same wiring for the handlebar controls, speakers, etc. with the exception of the vehicle speed wire mentioned above. You can confirm this by comparing the wiring diagrams in the Service Manuals for your pre-'06 bike and any '06 and newer model. That's what I did when I went ahead and installed the HK head unit in my '04.

If you buy a brand new HK head unit, it will need to be calibrated by the dealer. A used unit will have been calibrated previously.

So when purchasing one of these radios I need a wiring harness too from what I am being told. Are their different companies selling these? I saw where Biketronics sell one but it 199.00. So between the radio and wiring that is about 350.00 to 400.00.
