I gotta believe that there is a lot of difference between testing in a controlled environment and an "oh sh_t" experience. I don't doubt that there are a few highly experienced riders that might be able to modulate brakes as effectively as a computer but human error is what it is. I'm real happy that I have it on mine and wouldn't want to go without it.

i'm really glad my 08 sg does not have abs. nor does it have air bags, thanks anyway. it's a bit more complicated than i care for. methinks it's a sign that the yuppies done took over.

So you are saying that you can outperform a computerized ABS system using both brakes on icy road conditions and stop faster and shorter than a bike with ABS?

This is very simple really. ABS is a safety net.

When at optimum braking, the wheel is just on the verge of locking up. When you are at optimum braking the ABS system is passive and is doing nothing. It's when you apply that extra lil bit of pressure and the wheel starts to lock up, thats is when ABS starts to do it's thing. When you go beyond optimum braking.

I have ABS on my bike, do I like it? Yes.
Can H-D make it better? Of course.
Will I get another bike with it? Yes!

As I said, it's safety net. When I grab a ton of brake in an O'**** moment, I will be thankful that it's there. but I have no doubt that in a perfect world that I could and can stop faster than ABS would bring me to a stop... but then again, I don't live in a perfect world.

It's a linked system, so when you grab the front lever all brakes are applied. Light years ahead of Harley Davidson.
Out of ignorance I hadnt appreciated that the ABS on a HD is not linked....?? given emergency braking scenario to apply slow pressure to rear bake after the front and that the back for one reason or another tends to lock up first ? I wonder what the result is of those circumstances sometimes. Having spoken to Guys i know who have ABS and had hit the emergency button at times I dont think having it is a negative in some circumstances......again personal choice I suppose.

There was a time when I was much much much younger when I learnt a thing called "cadence braking", now havnt used or heard this term in years but i seem to recall it deep inside the brain cells, it was something i found myself constantly using on sport bikes where the brakes were used much more than on my harley and i guess something experienced riders adopt to avoid the majority of the "oh S!!t moments.......its a sound principle before the days of abs..

I came back to HD from a BMW 1200LT which is a great bike. There is only one thing I miss by comparison between it and my Ultra. The brakes. In my opinion they are the best brakes in the business.

The BMW braking on the LT is fully integrated. This differs from my understanding of "linked" systems which simply apply a proportional amount of braking to the one with the lower brake demand.

The integrated braking system considers bike speed, brake demand (pressure exerted on the pedal and or handle) and resolves it to the desired deceleration rate with the appropriate pressure to the front and rear brakes. There is much more to the system than this but the net effect is in an Oh S### moment and you grab a fistfull of front brake the bike is going to figure it out and deliver an awe inspiring fast safe stop.

I tried some really ridiculous stops on the BMW and was unable to tell whether the ABS function engaged or not.

The current Brembo ABS system is excellent and was a deal maker/breaker in my purchase but if HD ever subcontracts to BMW's brake system I'll purchase a new Ultra in a heart beat.

Next thing people are going to tell us is that when Harley installs airbags on the bikes that they can blow them up faster than the system can deploy them. It's just like the old seat belt arguers , thing is a lot of the people that are against safety devices change there mind when one saves their bacon. In a O'**** situation I want every advantage. But on the other hand I respect someones choice not to use or want a device. I used to be against running my headlight when I rode my old shovel. That was until my near death experience. Now it's high beam all the time during the Day.
